This is a fascinating story. The article barely scratches the surface.

The politician's deputy, who was in charge of the police in that province, made an unscheduled overnight visit to a US consulate, in an apparent attempt to defect/seek political asylum. He eventually agreed to leave, and was led away by Chinese security officials the next day.
