There's no retirement plan offered where I work, and up until recently we were only saving a small amount each month, choosing to put extra money towards paying off bills, and have not only been able to get our debt down to about 2,500, but have been able to reduce the ridiculous size of my dad's dead almost by half down to about 25k, but now i'm really wanting to start some sort of retirement fund/plan for us now.
What do I need to know? Advice, articles, etc. to get me started would be greatly appreciated!

Go to fidelity or vanguard. Open an IRA. Pick a target date retirement fund. Invest.

That reminds me, I still have $500 or so sitting in my Fidelity IRA rolled over from a previous 401(k).
