I've always gone for the lowest price I can find. I often can find a deal somewhere when I look for it.

Make sure you inspect the car and note any dings. Use a credit card that has insurance for rentals. Make sure you fill up before you return it (don't get the prepaid gas option).
Beyond that it's just transportation for a limited time. Get only what you need.
