We have a social safety net which often saves "normals" from such fate - so our homeless situation is tilted toward those who fall through that net.

Our mental health programs are SHIT, so we get all kinds of mentally ill or otherwise challenged/unstable folks living on the street. It's pretty deplorable, and I'm surprised it doesn't cause more violence ...
