Marty had a knife in his back, and was being dragged by one of the zombies, then off screen you see blood splatter.
They showed the vitals and pictures for all those being sacrificed in the control room. They would know if he was dead or alive.
When Bradley Whitmore answered the red phone, he asked "which one was improper?" or something like that. I took that to mean they had to bring back one of them.
