That horror filmmakers generally choose the most bland villain for that type of movie. Especially when you consider that Jason is the usual killer in those type of Cabin horror flicks.
Still, I'd say one issue I had with the film is it didn't manage to scary at the same time as it was self aware/funny like Scream did. Those first 10 minutes of Scream are really frightful. Nothing in Cabin in the Woods is like that.
