It shouldn't be much of a surprise. There entire history is built around controlling every aspect of their products.

They almost disappeared because they wouldn't license their operating system to other hardware manufacturers. If not for figuring out that people would pay more for a pretty container with average contents they probably would be a subsidiary of someone else at this point.
