hops it to 2nd, the short stop steps on the bag and then tosses to 1st for the double....pop out to 2nd and a quick toss to 1st to catch the runner

If the ball is caught in the air, the runner does not have to run. If it is on the ground at all, he's 'forced' to run. -- nm

On a hop the second baseman touches the bag and then throws to first for a double play. Caught in the air runner on 1st stays and is safe. Batter is
