hops it to 2nd, the short stop steps on the bag and then tosses to 1st for the double....pop out to 2nd and a quick toss to 1st to catch the runner

off base (can't advance on a fly till its caught or in play by dropping) so the runner has to tag up and then gets to run, normally a bad idea in this senario unless the ball is booted.
even if the batter makes it to 1st, the 1st base would be out if the 2nd is tagged with the ball (defenseman catches or holds the ball however momentarily)
