You are closer to these things than me, but my take is that the Liberals see themselves as the natural party of government.

The first loss to Harper and the Conservatives was a fluke, an aberration, and they fully expected to get back in next time

Then they lost a second time, and last year a third. They lost their way very quickly by assuming that voters would return to the same old formula.

I can see the same thing happening very easily to any party that has been in power for 41 years.
