You have a choice between trusting your wife and taking her at her word, or trusting a source whose trustworthiness is a complete unknown.
I can't imagine how frustrating this must be, but I do know that if you let it eat at you, it won't end well.
I do wish you well in navigating a very unpleasant situation.
