Just like everything else, appendicitis varies. I am currently carrying a patient who is on day 10 post appendectomy. Young guy (late 20s), no

diabetes or anything complicating it. However, his appendix was perforated when went it. It was pretty bad inside. Looks like he has abscesses inside now. We are draining those. He also came in with a hernia which may be hiding an abscess (long story). So yea.. we still can't get his white blood cells to go down. One day they go down then the next they spike up. Obviously this is a rare case but a perforated appendix buys you about at least 3-4 day hospital stay. A non-perf'ed appy you can probably go 2 days post-op.
And really, the MOST important line in that article: "Charges, therefore, have very little to do with what is actually paid by insurers,"
The hospital can charge $1M but insurance will only pay $5,000 and that is all. So I think it is not accurate at all to look at what is charged but better to look at what was actually paid. But it makes for a nice headline.. so whatevers.
