there's actually still a bit of a remnant of this. you can still get working holiday visas (that's how I first came), but also long service leave.

(not for you Meg, since I imagine you know already), but after you work for some employers (usually government) for ten years you get an extra chunk of annual leave (I think about nine weeks). it was originally intended to allow people to take the sea trip to the UK (and was originally 12 or 13 weeks).
