Maine is super peaceful and safe. Crime is massively personal there, so you don't get random muggings, murders, or even theft - it's always got some convoluted Jerry Springer background.
We were robbed... by our shithead landlord. Other than that, I was comfortable leaving my doors unlocked, car unlocked, stuff in front of the house. I walked around ANY part of town at night without a hint of fear. We knew a few crazies, so we cut them out of our life.. and they went on to do crazy crime things like you do there, but not to us :)
This is a misleading statement:
In Maine, violence and violence containment cost taxpayers roughly $1,300 per person in 2011, the study said, compared to the average of $3,260 across the country.
Sure, yeah, but they take it out of you in property tax, state tax, food tax, gas tax...just because there isn't generally crime, it doesn't make it some utopia.
