Not a parent, but I have a late birthday and wasn't held back. Grades, maturity, and sports wise I was completely fine.

My parents reasoning was "if I was a smart kid why hold me back, as opposed to getting me out there and learning."
I was always a star student, never felt behind in classes, and have always been mature for my age. Sports was a worry for them, but they realized in the end a few months didn't matter. I was fine.
