I was just thinking about this - I don't think extra wide hours are the main reason I have a work BB and now iPad (and actually the laptop, too).
I think it's for more flexibilty in general, not off-hours (although they can be useful, when needed in them). I actually leave my BB turned-off most of the time, leaving it on only when I say I'll be checking messages when in meetings or away from the office during a regularish work time, when I'm expecting something in particular, or for random other checks. (a select group of people know that I usually check messages at least once a day on weekends and they and certain others do have my personal cell number in case anything really time-pressed comes up.)
so, while no one would ever call me a work slacker, I limit my tethers. I know not everyone does/is able to do that; but I also sort of do it myself when it comes to other people. I always take into account what time it is and when I should reasonably expect non-urgent items to be taken care of, etc.
