i just take whatever flight makes the most sense. but even still i've earned a few short run free flights with Air Canada.

it hurts nothing to have a number, and, if you end up with a free flight down the road, bonus.
also, i get Air Canada aeroplan miles on a bunch of different airlines (Star Alliance.)
