hee. to your last point, something similar happened when my sister got engaged a couple months ago.

tried calling my mom to tell her first hand, but she didn't answer, and my sister was obviously very emotional, so left a voicemail crying, something like, "mom, when you get this, call me back as soon as you can. i really need to talk to you." and hung up.
my mother, understandably, thought she had been abducted by terrorists or something. :)
