Bust your ass to turn around a project as fast as you can and that time will be the new minimum time allocated for future projects.
I use the 'delay sending' function on most work emails so people don't get used to (and therefore annoyed by future lack of) immediate turnaround.
And (semi-related), I've always heard "never take a vacation if you don't work very hard, because they'll notice." So, the inverse is probably true. If you take a day off when you know things are going to be hectic and people will be crying I WISH CAPPIE WAS HERE!, that's gotta be good for job security.
