A more prestigious example then - I wouldn't say Hamlet is a Laurence Olivier character.

When they chose Whedon, I could instantly see it was a good fit. He knows GFBs, his TV shows were all about team dynamics, and if he's worked with Marvel before, it's easy to see why they would trust him with the capstone to their five year plan.
But at the same time, I think there's a huge difference between Firefly and the Avengers. Just like there's a huge difference between Thor and Kenneth Branagh's Shakespeare films. They share similar themes, but in terms of scale, budget, dealing with actors' egos, dealing with studios nervous about their $200 million invested in the picture, they are very different.
