They're just resting there. It's a horrible, long journey and he's a waypoint on the way past the wall.
As for the men of the Night's Watch, they're worried about Mance Rayder, King-Beyond-the-Wall. He's a former member of the Night's Watch who left it behind and now the wildlings follow him. They have designs on attacking the wall. I know it's not clear on the show, but that's the deal.
