The Night's Watch has heard rumours that the Wildlings are organizing, and if they were to get their shit together, could easily overrun then, since they're undermanned (Plus there's all the stuff about the White Walkers). They need to find proof of this to bring back to King's Landing so that they'll take it seriously. Pervo's camp is an important resupply station and a good source of information.
