Just start scanning them. Put them in folders based on when you scanned them....then tag the pictures with whatever filing you style you have

I have my holiday photos tagged
Holiday > What Holiday > What Year
so if I want all my Xmas photos, I go to the Xmas tag and see them all, if I was Xmas 1991, I just drill down more.
I use Kodak EasyShare's program to do this.
I do the same for vacations, locations, people...etc etc.
