Dogbert: all that matters is whether to batter has been announced as the hitter. You don't need to pitch the ball for him to be considered in the

game. He's official when the announcement is made. For example, if the Yankees decide to pinch hit for Swisher with Nunez and the announcement gets made then Swisher is out for the game and Nunez is officially in without ever having seen a pitch. Now if the other team makes a pitching change Girardi can't pinch hit for Nunez without losing him for the game. He could pinch hit for Nunez with someone else but he then Nunez would be out for the game and without seeing a single pitch.
It's happened before but not often.
