Looks like it's a Super qualifer, which has surprisingly decent top 8 payouts

The link is to the Facebook page for the event. There aren't side events or anything, this isn't like an Open Event or something, just a qualifier. I have no idea how well they actually draw.

Keep in mind Avacyn Restored will be legal in the tournament since it's released tomorrow and can be played in Standard. I'm not sure how much of an effect it will have on the metagame immediately. It might take until the Pro Tour next weekend for it to really impact things.

I'd say yes, good experience and how much of a waste of cash you think it is is up to you. Looks like an SCG Atlanta event is scheduled for September and that's an invitational this event can qualify you for. They just upped the payouts for that event. It's nuts.
