you never know what a band will do. If they evolve and the audience allows for it they survive...

talent has a lot to do with it.
Pearl Jam shed fans but that's only because they were literally the most popular band in the word for 2 albums. 20 years later they still sell out big shows and the audience is fervent. A lot of their contemporaries are balding local selectman, dead or desperate to remain relevant.
You're totally right about Run DMC. If we had to pick then I assume most would have picked them to be relevant 30 years later.
I remember the discussion around including Rap in the Grammies.
