In response to "Mitt Romney didn't really want to fire Richard Grenell -- (link)" by pixitude

My take on this is that Romney (or his team) was just trying to control the conversation.

And they bungled it massively.

Presidential politics has come down to a matter of who can control the conversation better. If you can keep the discussion on your topics of choice better than the other guy can -- you win.

In this case, they had a situation where some nutjobs were starting to move the conversation away from what Romney wanted it to be. His (or his team's) solution was to muzzle Grenell. I believe their thinking was that if Grenell stayed out of the spotlight for a few days, then the conversation would move away from him and back to what they wanted to discuss. This was obviously a bad call in hindsight.

I think Grenell is completely justified in his response. And unfortunately for Romney, it means that the conversation has now moved completely away from the topics he wants to discuss.
