I guess I see more room for attracting middle ground votes with an "evolving" position.

I think there are a LOT of casually homophobic people that will not have that guide their vote UNLESS there is stark evidence that the president intends to repeal DOMA and support a federal recognition of gay marriage.

You may be right that there is more to gain from a strong voice of support. But my gut says that it is still an effective wedge issue that would hurt him more than help him.
