Thanos is a mythological character (comic books are chock full of those), but he isn't obsessed with time. Instead, he loves the (female) incarnation of Death. He wants to impress her, and he figures that the Cosmic Cube aka the Tesseract is just the item to achieve this.
His underling is apparently a very important villain from the Fantastic Four rogues gallery, which surprised me.
