So I called the pediatrician's office bright and early this morning - after 10 minutes on hold, I decided to try back later. I did get through and got

an appointment, and while waiting for the receptionist to schedule one, I was asking her about the "same day appointment" thing.

She told me it's temporary, until the staff and doctors get used to using the new, complex system. It's in place partially to lighten the load of the doctors while they learn the system. I said she must be slammed every morning with calls, as I was waiting for 10 minutes earlier. She said yeah, she started answering phones at 8AM and at one point looked over and saw there were 17 calls waiting in the queue.

This should only be in place for another 3 or so weeks. I'm sure they are looking forward to that being gone just as much as the potentially annoyed parents are.
