Hmm. Interesting points. Can't say I have a rejoinder for that :)

I guess I have a problem with cuts; not with the concept of cuts, but with the trickle-down effect, such as the cancellation of government-funded non-profit programs like CAP (which helped me out greatly as a youth by providing me with gainful employment in my field of expertise) and the inevitable decay of provincial health systems (characterized in BC by extreme issues with wait times and huge senior housing debacles, although much of this is actually the fault of the BC Liberals, who suck a donkey's nut).
I do like long-term planning (such as infrastructure, health, and education), but actual consultation between the elected Members would (if executed properly) be a greater force for planning than one party on its own. By that I mean, if everyone who was elected could negotiate a long-term plan based on the wants and needs of their constituents, and the country as a whole, it might be easier for subsequent majorities to consider executing it. Rather than how it's done now, where each incoming party seems to rip the previous party's plans to shreds, with the exception of the tax hikes that they lied about eliminating. (Hi, GST! Thanks for dropping by two percent ... at least your party didn't totally lie about eliminating you.)
As to your point about stagnation: Stagnation leads to contempt, contempt leads to resistance, resistance leads to action, and action leads to majorities. It's a cycle, much like climate change. :) So in a way, even if we both stick to our guns about what we think is right in the short-term, the system will cycle through and correct itself - and we have the benefit of having more than just 2 ideological gravity wells to bounce between.
So at the very least, our system appears better (in my view) than theirs ... but that's a bit off topic.
