Ultimately I think the issue here is about the impact on the base as much as swaying people.

Obama is highlighting the social issue distinctions between the parties because the extreme conservative part of the republican party is driving that agenda for the party (and is out of step with the majority of Americans on these issues). I think as much as anything this is trying to inspire the more apathetic democrats to get out there. They may be disappointed in Obama and not engaged as they were last time and the real key to the elections is simply turnout of your base. For many who think that at base there is little difference between Romney and Obama (and there are people who think that, and past on actual record, they aren't necessarily wrong), this is a defining reason to vote. I do think it may have some positive impact on fence sitting independents as well. The question is whether it does more to fire up the base of Republicans than Democrats. If so, it will hurt.
