Das Rhinegold by Wagner/NY Metropolitan Opera at an AMC Theater
The ticket was $18 which seemed both expensive and cheap at the same time. The crowd was ancient. The second youngest person was probably 20 years older than me. There were about 50 people there and mostly sitting in the easy to access areas.
The opera was in German and subtitled, and surprisingly easy to follow. There was so much repetition that it hard to miss important plot points. The staging involved a hanging/slanted/backdrop that was used to great effect including some top views of people walking down great flights of stairs to the underworld.
The music was interesting and exciting and definitely had that leitmotif thing going on. The video quality was a tad less than the usual digital Hollywood movie, but opera singers in HD close ups are scary. They aren't the most attractive people and some of them were so portly that the costumes were amusing in how they tried to hide the girth. The female diva was enormous, but was replaced by a much smaller/athletic stunt double whenever there was wire work to be done.
I totally get where the "spear and magic helmet" stuff comes from in Bugs Bunny now.
I haven't decided if I want to watch the next three parts, but it's a possibility.
