Try to get this logic past defenders of marriage.

The idea there'd be Civil Unions means those existing governmental marriages would be re-classified; else you have a direct Separate But Equal designation.
Barack Obama yesterday, in the eyes of conservative mouthpieces, attacked marriage by saying more should be allowed to partake in it.
What do you think the response would be by changing the governmental status from married to "Civil Unioned"?
This is a point in time where the logical answer is precluded by the illogical defense of the concept of what marriage is in a modern society.
