PMB, I understand where you're coming from on this.

The problem Romney faces is that if he's too apologetic, he spits in the mouth of the gift horse Obama gave him yesterday. If he isn't apologetic enough, he alienates a significant percentage of voters who support SSM (and it's commendable that birthday boy Vermin is one of us who do).

Romney is in that spot where McCain got trapped four years ago. He's trying to identify the type of campaign he wants to run versus the one his strategists believe he needs to run.

I am of the opinion that Romney is the Republican Party's John Kerry, someone who represents the majority of the party but doesn't excite anybody inside or outside his base. Even so, this much attention given to a haircut thirty years ago drives me crazy with the silliness of it. Santorum actively campaigned on a racist remark he made during his first primary. That didn't get the outcry that this has. And that bothers me a great deal.
