I think I respect Obama more for his role in the Abottabad raid than the announcement on gay marriage.

His decisions to collect the necessary intelligence and to go ahead with the raid were focussed on ensuring the operation's success, and once the decision was made he played his hand pretty coolly. It also involved some really tough decisions on how it would affect the relationship with Pakistan. (I'm sure politics came into play, as they do in all Presidential decisions, but they didn't sidetrack the objective.)
The announcement on gay marriage was a political calculation. It's designed to increase his (and the Democrats') chances in the election - it's not aimed at the objective of ensuring gay marriage is legalised. I respect him for making this announcement before the election rather than after, but if he didn't think it would help in November, he wouldn't have said it.
