It happens rather often. Depending on where the 1st baseman fields the ball it'll decide which base he goes to first.

The play you described happens all the time. The other option would be for the 1st baseman to pick up the grounder and go to second to get the force out and then wait for the return throw to get the batter running to first. The second scenario happens often when the 1st baseman is too far from the 1st base bag to run there and then turn and throw to second in time to get the runner.
They're both common.
