no, i get his point. this is just an aside.. for insurance, tax, etc reasons, there has to be a system by which i am legally coupled.. why is it a

state issue, not federal?

we can get in to the "should marriage or civil unions matter" discussion, but lets go on the basis that a lot of our legal systems rely on it in some way and discuss why it's left up to states.
