Here you get little ticket to put in your window and if you still have time left after you leave you can park

somewhere else and keep using the same ticket from the last meter until it runs out. The only caveat being that they have to be of equal value. You can't pay for a spot in Brooklyn then run to Manhattan and use the cheaper ticket from Brooklyn.
People will also pass it along to the next person parking if they see someone and they won't need it anymore.
