here's my Monday Monday ST Poll ... the word "jipped" (meaning to be robbed or cheated of something) ... do you find it to be an offensive word? ...
|
apparently some people find it to be a racial slur against gypsies, because sometimes the word is spelled "gyped", and thus the possible reference to gypsies ....
I've never really thought it to be an offensive or otherwise racial slur item ... though I can understand the possible slight against the Gypsy image ...

your chance of offending an actual gypsy is less than if you said something about being jewed

There's no "possible" about it - gyp is clearly a reference to gypsies. And yeah, it's offensive -- nm

I don't but I've been told it's offensive. I try not to use it but I still do sometimes. -- nm

Technically a slur, yes, but even though Mrs.V has some gypsy blood in her, it doesn't particularly bother either of us. -- nm

We've had this discussion on ST, since it is a slur against one or more posters ... sort of. -- nm
