Thinking more about the life expectancy conversation from earlier, it's a bit of a misleading stat.

Most of the gains in LE in history, and even recent years, haven't been from making older people even older, but in getting people to live through childhood. Once you get past 10 there's a big jump in life expectancy.
To put it another way, since 1900, we've gained about 27 years of life expectancy from birth, but for people who reach age 60, we've gained about 6 years.
