So far that's been true of the US version as well.

I know things are different this year, but I don't know how it all plays out.
In the past they have basically run the first stage, then maybe an extended first stage (like they've done so far this year), then put the top people in a competition boot camp thing. The top 3 (maybe 5) go to Japan to compete.
