Tragicomic lunch story

I took my research student out to lunch today. He smokes, so I drove us to a "bar & grill" nearby with outdoor seating so he could smoke if he wanted. He'd never been, and I'd only been there once about a year ago.
We're the only ones there, probably their first customers of the day (at 1:30pm). I order the burger and fries, he "loves ricotta" so he got the stuffed shells with a salad. His salad comes out, and there are tiny bugs all over it. He's kinda grossed out, but just deals with it. Our main food comes, he of course tells the server about the salad. He takes one bite of the stuffed shells... and spits it out. The ricotta had gone sour. The manager comes outside (not knowing about the shells) and asks how everything is going. The student tells him about the pasta, and I don't think the manager ever stopped walking but just picked it up and carried it back in. He ended up offering him anything else off the menu, but he'd had it by that point, so he got a $10 certificate for his next lunch there. Which I'm guessing will be the day before never.
My burger was fine. But I picked off the lettuce. Just in case.
So my student's lunch was three cigarettes.
