speaking of yelp, I'm peeved at them - I recently wrote my first two reviews for local restaurants, only to discover the other day that they'd been

filtered-out and are now only visible if you click on "filtered" and enter captcha-type codes and go seeking for them.

their FAQ says it can happen automatically from their filters' settings, which aren't publicly described; and there's no way for their feedback readers to reinstate filtered reviews. they suggest you just keep on writing reviews until the filter learns you don't suck, basically.

in the note I wrote (although they actually say no response will ever be given!), I mentioned that it's discouraging for new reviewers, who give time and actual thought to reviews, to see their reviews disappear; and it's not exactly swell for them to say the fix is to write more and see what happens?!

one restaurant has 481 reviews and 57 filtered - crazy, especially since not all of them are from new reviewers nor people who just gave a few words or seemed suspicious or something.

I've read/heard about various complaints about them, but this was new to me. I still find them very useful as a screening tool (fully utilizing my own sorts instead of theirs, etc.); but now I know to look one step farther when checking out places.

(grr.)
