The main problem with hindsight is that you ignore what the mood was at that time

It's hard in 2009 to look back at Cimmaron and wonder what Oscar voters were thinking in 1931. Because we aren't them, and aren't seeing the film through their eyes.
Very few people had an issue with Winona's nomination in 1994. We're seeing what didn't become of her, and now wondering what the big deal was.
