In the second book, the moment that Tyrion arrives in King's Landing, he has people start building a chain. At first, it's unclear what sort of chain this is, but when the battle arrives, you realize that it's a giant chain that will aid in taking out Stannis's fleet of ships. They also use the wildfire just as they did in the episode last night, but the chain is a huge factor in gaining an advantage - and shows that Tyrion is wisely strategizing the moment he becomes Hand of the King.
