it's not unusual. you create heros out of people, you celebrate individual events that, in all reality, probably didn't feel THAT important at the time - it was just people reacting to a situation. Not to say that these things shouldn't be celebrated, or that they weren't critical turning points, but in the moment that's probably not how it felt. over time, they become 'legends' - even if true.
