Early in his career, a friend of mine was interviewed for a job with the Department of Defence. The reference check went something like:

I had to do this years ago for a buddy who was taking a commission on a nuclear sub. It was all pretty standard patriotic stuff

I do --- they'll ask standard questions about his behaviors --- ever shown tenedency to abuse drugs, legal/otherwise....does he talk about money woes.
