the nephew is only 3. give it time, extend the offer to get together when you can, and just act like you have the relationship you want to have - she seems open to.

maybe, someday, in the not-soon future, you can discuss this incident, but i truly wouldn't until it is in the distant past and the current relationship is strong and well estabilished. you have too much (the nephew) to lose.
