Jean Valjean is the main character, he's been convicted of stealing (a loaf of bread, IIRC).
He gets out of prison and through some aid from a clergyman (who catches him stealing, but allows it under the guise of "use this stuff to change your life around") assumes a new identity and somehow works his way up the ladder in French society all the way to mayor of a small town (right around the time of the Revolution).
A dying girl trusts him with the care of her infant daughter, while the police start to clue in that he's really the vile prisoner. All hell breaks loose. :)
